A note from Room 121…

Happy First Snow Day!  I am sure your kinderpup was excited about our first snow day!   I hope they get a chance to go outside and play in the snow!  Wow!  We read a total of 51 books on Raz-Kids as a class last week!  Way to go Kinderpups!

The PTA sent home a flyer last week in the Wednesday Folders about Harmony’s Teacher Fundraisers.  The kindergarten team is having two fundraisers in January:
-         Frozen Pretend Sleepover!  Join us for a night filled the cool treats, games to play, and watch Frozen on the big screen!  Wear your pajamas; bring a pillow, sleeping bag, and your favorite stuffed animal friend to school for a sleepover that is pretend!  Students can be dropped off at 6:00 pm and picked up at 8:30 pm on Friday, January 23, 2015 at school.  This would be a great date night for Mom and Dad!  This is a fundraiser for our class.  The fee is $25 per child. Please make checks payable to the Harmony PTA.  Please visit http://vols.pt/F8nHVK or email me to sign up!  All students are welcome to attend!
-         Ninja Turtle Pretend Sleepover! You are invited to a totally awesome pretend sleepover at Harmony’s Secret Sewer Lair! We will eat radical treats, play games, and watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the Big Screen!  Bring a pillow and blanket.  Students can be dropped off at 6:00 pm and picked up at 8:30 pm on Friday, January 30, 2015 at school.  This would be a great date night for Mom and Dad!  This is a fundraiser for our class.  The fee is $25 per child. Please make checks payable to the Harmony PTA.  Please visit http://vols.pt/6jK1iD or email me to sign up!  All students are welcome to attend!
This is the only fundraisers we do that all of the proceeds go directly into our classroom budget.  I use the money raised to purchase new books, supplies, and tools for our classroom.

Reminders
* Don’t forget to send in your lunch order form if you plan on ordering lunch from the cafeteria after our Thanksgiving Play.
*We go outside every day to play (unless it is raining) please send your child to school with a jacket and gloves/hats and in weather appropriate clothing.  It gets chilly outside some days!  This would be a great time to start practicing zipping up our own jackets and coats.  We are practicing at school too!
* We have had to change our daily schedule to access the gym for our Thanksgiving Play practice.  Our class now eats lunch in the classroom every day.  Our classroom will be a little crowded, so we will resume lunch dates after Thanksgiving.
* Canned Food Drive: We are collected canned goods and any other non-perishable boxed foods. If you would prefer to donate money for 300 hams, bread, milk, sugar, apples, potatoes, peanut butter, sugar and pancake mix; simply write a check out to SOICC in the amount desired.

What are we learning?
Reading Workshop
We will continue reading several Kevin Henkes books.  We will focus on determining the problem and solution in each book.  We will learn that most literary books have a problem and solution.  The solution is always directly related to the problem.

Writing Workshop
We will extend our retelling into writing and learn how to write a complete story, including the beginning, middle and end.

Word Study
This week, we will explore the word families: -at, -an, -am.  Ask your child about the phonics chants for all. We will also learn how to read and write these words that will be added to our Word Wall: are, with, one.  Have your child sing you the songs for these words.

Math
We will begin our unit on 2-D and 3-D shapes.  Students will review 2-D shapes and discuss their attributes.  Students will learn about 3-D shapes and their attributes.

Social Studies
This week, we will continue to discuss the Eastern Woodland Native Americans and prepare for our play.
