A note from Ms. Poteet…

As the weather is getting warmer, make sure you dress your child in layers.  Often it is chilly in our classroom but warm outside.  Packing a light jacket for the classroom would be great.

Important Dates this Month:

March 29th: North Campus March Mania at 5:30

April 5th: Kindergarten Poetry Potluck from 6:00-7:30

April 9th-13th: Spring Break

 What are we learning?

Reading Workshop

We will learn how and why good readers create mental images in their head while reading.  Visualizing is a skill required when students begin reading book without pictures.  When readers create mental images, they engage with text in ways that make it personal and memorable to them alone.  Anchored in prior knowledge, images come from the emotions and all five senses, enhancing understanding and immersing the reader in rich detail.

Writing Workshop

We are continuing our Poetry Unit.  Students will read various poems written by children their own age, notice repeating words, usage of sensory descriptors and other poetic devices.  Then they will try their own.

Word Study

This week, we will explore word families (-ick, -ack, -uck, -ock)  We will also learn how to read and write these words that will be added to our Word Wall: run, has, three. Have your child sing you the songs for these words.

Math

Students will solve addition problems using mental math, learn about the quarter, and equivalent names for numbers.

Social Studies

We will finish our study of the seven continents.  We will focus on Antarctica, Europe, and Australia.
